The Rotary Club of Kalimpong felicitated 5 teachers with the Nation Builder Award issued by the Rotary India Literary Mission on 10th November at a ceremony held at the Rotary Centre. Mrs Tashi Chheten Sherpa (WBJS), Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The recipients were Ashis Gurung, Asst Teacher of Upper Ladam High School, Binod Chettri, Asst Teacher of Judhabir Higher Secondary School, Namrata Rai, Asst Teacher of Kagay Higher Secondary School, Rakesh Tamang, Asst Teacher Ambiok High School and Sonika Tamang of Ambiok Primary School. The Club Literacy Committee Chair, Rtn Pravin Pradhan gave a ppt on the NBA and its significance. The President, Rtn Sheila Rai Fudong gave a brief history of Rotary and the work it has been doing globally in more than 200 countries. She mentioned that after Polio, the focus was now on eradicating illiteracy in India. Govt and semi govt school teachers play a big role in moulding young students minds but are often unrecognised. The Chief Guest, Secretary Tashi Chheten Sherpa, congratulated the recipients and spoke about how students of far flung areas needed special mentoring from their teachers as a majority of their parents were not in a position to do so. The awardees expressed their gratitude to RC Kalimpong for visiting their schools to conduct the assessments. They were now motivated to do even more for their students. Among the audience were the Heads and students of the 5 schools and Rotarians.
